In this instalment of Player Spotlight we will be talking to Autumn Burchett. One of the most successful English players in recent times Autumn has finished in the Top 16 of a Pro Tour, won a Magic Online Championship Series event on Magic Online and repeatedly smashes any event Francois Hauchard organises. Currently a Silver Level Pro and the reigning English National Champion after an undefeated run last year, Autumn is a force to be reckoned with.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your Magic playing history?
I started playing Magic in 2013 around the time that Dragon’s Maze was released. Since then I’ve played on 5 Pro Tours, with my best result being 11th place at Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar. I’ve achieved Silver Level Pro status twice and last year I won English Nationals. My favourite deck ever is Grixis Delver, although I adored both Temur Energy and Modern Dredge, before they banned Golgari Grave-Troll.
My favourite formats are Legacy and Cube draft, although I enjoy playing pretty much any format of Magic. My favourite draft formats are triple Khans of Tarkir, Amonkhet/Hour of Devastation and Invasion Block draft.
Q: What is your favourite Magic card of all time?
Nissa, Vastwood Seer. It is possibly the most satisfying card to cast ever.
Q: What is your favourite Magic memory?
Winning English Nationals without dropping a match <3.
Q: Which players comprise your playtesting group?
I don’t have a specific testing group but I often talk to a combination of Stephen Murray, Jadine Klomparens, George Channing and Ryan Pugh in the run-up to any big tournaments. My local playgroup consists of Hannah Lissaman, Nik Ek, Neil Grayson, Sanchia Constance, Alex Watson and Daniel St.John-Hall, although I only see them once every few months.
Q: What was your record at last year’s English Nationals?
14-0-1. I ID’d the last round of swiss because I love ruining a good storyline.
Q: What are you most looking forward to for this year’s English Nationals?
Audibling into a different Constructed deck the night before the tournament again!
Q: How likely do you think you are to win English Nationals this year?
All I have to say is that I have yet to lose a match at English Nationals...
English Nationals run from 17th-19th August at the Watford Colosseum. More details and registration options can be found here: https://events.axionnow.co.uk/Events/EventDetails/341
About George Channing:
George has been playing competitively since 2014 and is a true grinder; with a huge number of competitive events under his belt, his results have been improving year on year. With a Grand Prix Top 8 in Modern and a few Pro Tour appearances, he aspires to become a regular on the biggest stage. George’s role on Team Axion is frequently related to metagame and decklist analysis, whilst also providing a lot of raw testing data. He most enjoys Standard with the speed and frequency of the metagame developments keeping it interesting.
