 MEGA Legacy - April 2022 Decklists

106 Legacy enthusiasts started the day, vying for the chance to come out on top of everyone else and walk home with some exquisite original Dual Lands. Normally a tournament organiser would say that only 8 players would get to walk away with them but thanks to our unique 'Bonus 8s' I have the pleasure of letting you know that we gave away 10 original Dual Lands! 8 of those went to the Top 8, as you may expect, but players down to 24th place had the chance to compete either for a Dual or for a handful of Modern Horizons 2 boosters at the end of the day. There was a high quality field on the day, with one of the joint winners being the first Mythic Champion, Autumn Burchett (when they were a member of Team Axion Now)! They completed a remarkable achievement, reminiscent of their triumphant march towards the title of England National Champion in 2018, in that they went through the whole Mega Weekend (Modern AND Legacy) without losing a match - a mere twenty matches! 

 

As for the Top 8, there seems to have been a very clear 'correct' choice of deck: 8Cast. No fewer than 5 copies of this deck made the Top 8, leaving me very thankful when I had the opportunity to type up something different! 8Cast is packed with newer cards, featuring as it does Urza's Saga, Thought Monitor and Kappa Cannoneer. Despite this, the strategy of the deck harks back to the old days of true affinity, where a pilot takes advantage of the 'Affinity' mechanic by playing lots of cheap artifacts to make their powerful late-game spells cost very little mana. In this deck there are 3 cards that get their cost reduced by artifacts: Thought Monitor, Thoughtcast and (essentially) Kappa Cannoneer.

 

The rest of the Top 8 was fleshed out by the everpresent UR Delver, the somewhat forgotten Infect and an interesting creature strategy named Esper Vial by its pilot. Esper Vial takes advantage of Aether Vial and Recruiter of the Guard to gain incremental value, as well as the ability to tutor for key interactive or lock pieces PLUS the ability to blink them all later with Yorion, Sky Nomad for additional value.

 

All in all it was a great day and we look forward to running it back in the future. In the short-term thouogh, we are holding another MEGA Weekend on June 18th where the Main Event is our famous MEGA Modern and is back in Milton Keynes.
