Top 8 Decklists - Modern for Goodies - August 2019

The weather may have taken a dip but the competition was as hot as ever, with no less than 3 Burn players making our Top 8 and a bonus Mono Red Prowess as well! Mono Green Tron was back in our Top 8, alongside the decks most would have expected: a traditional Dredge deck and the current menace of Modern, Hogaak! The final place in the Top 8 went to a deck few would have expected though, Bant Day's Undoing.

 

Let's take a few moments to check out the Bant Day's Undoing list to try and understand what's going on. The deck is constructed around the powerful 3 mana Planeswalkers: Narset, Parter of Veils and Teferi, Time Raveler. Day's Undoing pairs very nicely with Narset; allowing the decks' pilot to turn the symmetrical effect into a draw 7, your opponent discards their hand. On the other hand, Delay turns into a de facto counterspell when paired with an on board Teferi, preventing opponents' spells from being cast off suspend. These interactions give the pilot the time and resources to assemble the combo of Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi and Inkmoth Nexus for a rapid kill, almost from nowhere!

 

As for the Top 8, the final was decided between our regular Head Judge, Nik Ek, playing the menacing Hogaak and Mythic Championship I winner, Autumn Burchett, playing Mono Red Prowess. The final was a hard-fought affair, with Nik Ek taking the victory and showing that Judges know how to handle a deck of Magic cards when the opportunity arises.
