Pioneer for Goodies – First ever!!!

The atmosphere was electric as the venue was bursting at the seams with eager enthusiasts of the new format, Pioneer. Francois started proceedings off with his traditional welcome speech, where he offered an exclusive In-Store offer of 30% off French language cards, yet another great reason to attend Axion Now events.

 

With Pioneer being a brand new format there is plenty of room for players to bring to the battlefield cards that most players may have forgotten even existed. There were certainly examples of this looking around the room but the Top 8 turned out to be decks that have proved to be early contenders for the best deck in the format. There were two Ramp variants (Mono G and GR), two GB variants (morph and lands), a Mono U, a RB vehicles, a UG Nexus and a Hardened Scales. Many of these decks may look familiar to those who have been playing Standard through the Pioneer-legal era of sets, as many of them are based on powerful Standard decks from this time. Of course, with the addition of more cards to the legal card pool these decks have become even more powerful than they were back then.

 

In the early days of Pioneer the powerful land card, Field of the Dead, has proven very popular. Field of the Dead, having recently been deemed too powerful for Standard, appeared in 4 of our Top 8 decks, providing them a ‘sticky’ threat that allows them to grind down their opponents through the late game. Only one of them was built to focus on this powerful card and none of them were the anticipated Bant Field deck.

 

The Final of this ‘Goodies’ event was a split with the players being great friends who had travelled here together and both keen to begin the journey home down the M3. Congratulations go to Luke Ankers and Kristian Barlow for their shared glory!
